Tips for Picking the Perfect Berries
Share
Whether you're headed to the farmer's market, a pick-your-own farm, or your own backyard, these tips will help you select the best raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries.
Raspberries
- Look for plump, juicy berries that are a deep, vibrant red color. Avoid any that are shriveled, moldy, or have white or green tops.
- Gently lift the cluster and check underneath - the berries should come off the stem easily with a gentle tug.
- Handle raspberries with care, as they are delicate and bruise easily. Try to pick directly into your container.
- Look for patches with a mix of ripe and nearly ripe berries so you can return for more in a few days.
Blackberries
- Choose blackberries that are completely black or very dark purple in color. Avoid any that are still red or have a pink hue.
- The berries should be plump and firm, but not hard. Gently squeeze a few to check for ripeness.
- Inspect the underside of the berry cluster. The berries should come off easily with a slight twist.
- Wear long sleeves and gloves to protect against the thorny blackberry bushes.
Strawberries
- Look for strawberries that are a deep, even red color all the way through. Avoid any with white or green tips.
- The berries should be plump and have a natural shine. Steer clear of shriveled or dull-looking strawberries.
- Gently pull the strawberry by the cap or stem, twisting slightly. Ripe strawberries will detach easily from the plant.
- Check the underside of the berry - it should be free of bruises, mold, or damage.
Blueberries
- Look for deep blue and plump blueberries
- Avoid green or pink berries
- Gently shake the bush to pick ripe berries that fall off easily
- Pick only the amount you need to enjoy them fresh
- Blueberries are delicate, handle them with care for optimal flavor and texture
Regardless of the berry, handle them gently and avoid over-picking. This will ensure you get the freshest, most flavorful berries possible. Happy picking!
