The opaque projector predates the overhead projector. Beseler Lyte Projectors were built in the 1900s. It displays opaque materials by shining a bright lamp onto the object from above. A system of mirrors and imaging lenses is used to focus an image of the material onto a viewing screen. Opaque projectors require brighter bulbs and larger lenses than overhead projectors. Opaque projectors are not as common as the modern "overhead." In the early and mid-20th century, opaque projectors were produced and marketed as an artist's enlargement tool to allow images to be transferred to a prepared canvas. A large fan keeps the 1000 Watt bulb cool.
