Buffalo Pottery, a prominent player in railroad china, was founded in the early 1900s by the Larkin Soap Company. They aimed to create affordable china items as complementary gifts for soap purchases, competing with English Staffordshire potteries. One of their most popular lines for collectors, Deldare Ware, was established. Buffalo Pottery catered to diverse clients including railroads, restaurants, the military, and cruise ships.
In 1907, Buffalo Pottery introduced the first American version of the Blue Willow China pattern. Inspired by an ancient Chinese love story, the pattern depicts a tragic tale of a young girl, her forbidden lover, and a spurned suitor. Symbolized by doves, their souls endure. Buffalo's Blue Willow pattern continues to captivate collectors, adding to the enduring allure of blue and white china.
