The History of Gingerbread

The History of Gingerbread

Gingerbread dates back to ancient times, with its origins traced to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks who used ginger in their cooking. The use of gingerbread as we know it today became popular in Medieval Europe, particularly in Germany, where monks began baking it for festivals and fairs. In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I is said to have created the first gingerbread men, kicking off the tradition of decorating gingerbread with elaborate designs. Gingerbread houses also became popular in Germany during the 19th century, thanks to the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel." Today, gingerbread is a beloved holiday treat enjoyed in various forms, from cookies to houses, around the world.
