During World War II, the American Red Cross provided relief supplies for civilian victims of conflict and established a Blood Donor Service to produce plasma for the armed forces. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Red Cross mobilized volunteers and staff to provide aid to the sick and wounded and serve as a communication medium between the people of the United States and their military.
The American Red Cross is restructuring its operations nationwide, resulting in the consolidation of the Westfield and Berkshire Chapters with the Pioneer Valley Chapter in Springfield. The move will eliminate some positions in the local chapters. However, the services, classes, disaster relief, and blood drives will remain the same. The Westfield Chapter will continue all of its current programs at St. John’s Lutheran Church under the direction of the Board of Directors, administered under the Pioneer Valley Red Cross Chapter.
