Antique W.C. Pritchard Jack Jumper Sled Adams MA Vintage New England

Offered is a vintage/antique New England jack jumper sled, attributed to the W. C. Pritchard Co. of Adams, Massachusetts, a well-known Massachusetts maker of one-runner jack jumpers.

This wonderful old sled retains its original red and black painted finish, wooden construction, metal runner/strapping, support rods, hardware, and a surviving original manufacturer's label. The label is heavily worn but still clearly preserves “ADAMS, MASS.” and portions of the manufacturer's wording.

The jack jumper is approximately 31 inches long from end to end of the runner, approximately 16½ inches high from the bottom of the runner to the top of the seat, and the seat measures approximately 16 × 5 inches.

Pritchard jack jumpers were manufactured in Adams, Massachusetts for many years. Historical documentation indicates that Walter C. Pritchard began producing these one-runner sleds after establishing his shop in the early 1910s and continued manufacturing them until his retirement in 1953. The sleds were made in several sizes and were shipped throughout the country.

Condition:
The sled has extensive age-appropriate wear, including paint loss, scratches, abrasions, surface oxidation and areas where the underlying wood and earlier paint layers are visible. The original label is worn and partially obscured by decades of use and repainting/wear. There are also visible age-related separations and imperfections in the wood.

These imperfections are shown in the photographs and are an important part of the sled's vintage character. It has not been refinished or cosmetically restored, preserving its original aged appearance.

Dating: The exact manufacturing date is unknown. Based on the maker attribution, construction and surviving label, it is likely from the first half of the 20th century, within the period of Pritchard production.
