The idea for this came from a café nestled in a coastal town outside the island of Mount St. Michael, which is situated along the Cornish coast of England. It was morning, and we ordered coffee and milk with our scones. The proprietor served our breakfast with a small bowl of spice and urged us to mix it in our drinks, a custom he brought from his home in the French Alps. The taste of this potion reminded us of something that would warm one’s body and soul on those cold days when we all dream of sitting near a fire with a nice warm drink to ward off the dampness. Something the inhabitants of the island must have had to do often as it is only possible to cross over when a land bridge appears in tide or by way of a treacherous boat ride. Meant to be sprinkled atop coffee or warm or cold milk. Add a tsp to coffee grounds before brewing for a flavored coffee. Use as little or as much as you like. Don’t stop there! Include it in your baking. Add it to your baked goods, or try a pinch in your pancake and french toast batter for unforgettable breakfasts.
